Edward Wright left his mark in the fabric of our city, he was one of our most successful early architects. He won many competitions for building designs, some featured here, often in partnership with other architects. Wright also argued publicly for the use of Italianate design in our mediterranean climate. This tour visits some of his most well-known buildings in the heart of the City of Adelaide, with stories told by Keith Conlon, chair of the South Australian Heritage Council.

Adelaide General Post Office

Adelaide's GPO building was the tallest building in the city until well into the 20th century, and remains a significant landmark to this day.

Adelaide Town Hall

Edmund Wright won not one but two competitions for an Adelaide Town Hall design. The second one, with partner EJ Woods, was given the go-ahead by Council.

Bank of Adelaide

Architect Edmund Wright's love of Italian inspired designs for the South Australian climate is on full display in the former Bank of Adelaide building.

Edmund Wright House

Learn more about the building behind this 'magnificent forest of perfectly proportioned pillars'.

Parliament House

Take a close look at this grand Victorian academic classical monument in marble, and some of its story is revealed in stone.

J150 Plaque, Edmund Wright

While Edmund Wright's real legacy survives in the buildings he designed, he is also honoured with a plaque in his name on North Terrace.
