Tour

The war memorials in Adelaide tell us much about people's responses to loss and the impacts of war on our community. This tour is based on Keith Conlon's walk first run for the History Festival in 2014. Reflect with Keith on these moving monuments, and remember those who have given their lives for South Australia.

South African War Memorial

The mounted trooper reining in his horse commemorates South Australians who served in the South African War (1899-1902).

War Memorial

Architect Louis Laybourne-Smith and sculptor George Rayner Hoff created a memorial that conveys the impact of the First World War.

Torrens Parade Ground and Training Depot

During both world wars the Parade Ground served as a mustering point and enlistment centre.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander War Memorial

Australia’s first memorial to recognise the service of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples was unveiled in Adelaide on 10 November 2013.

Simpson and his Donkey

The iconic figure of 'Simpson and his Donkey' looks towards War Memorial Drive from the Angas Garden.

Cross of Sacrifice

The Cross of Sacrifice, part of the Women's War Memorial, was funded completely by donation from 'the women of South Australia'.

Did the tour today and really enjoyed it even with the rain. Keith and the staff at History SA gave us lots of information and we plan to have another look at the memorials we saw quickly today and a lot of others that we heard about. A job well done.
