ContributeA bronze bust outside the State Library of South Australia on North Terrace celebrates the life and work of renowned Adelaide sculptor, painter and teacher John Dowie AM (1915-2008). Among the many works he created for public display were the Three Rivers fountain in Victoria Square, Alice in Rymill Park and the Victor Richardson Gates at Adelaide Oval.
A voice recording located with the bust enables passers-by to hear Dowie talk about his career and approach to his work. At the unveiling on 15 November 2006, the 91-year-old said he was honoured by the bust which had ‘an interesting difference of angle, quite different from me, but at the same time it is me and it is a good likeness indeed’ (Advertiser, 16 November 2006).
Sculptor John Woffinden was a protégé and friend of John Dowie. He studied at Victoria College, Melbourne, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts (sculpture) in the 1980s. This was followed by study in Europe and work at several European art foundries. At the time he created the bust Woffinden lived and worked at his foundry at Mylor in the Adelaide Hills.

Hi Lily,
I'm afraid we don't hold a copy of the script. I believe it would be held by the City of Adelaide https://www.cityofadelaide.com.au/ There are also recordings related to Dowie's work held by the State Library of South Australia: http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au
I was a visitor to Adelaide recently. Dr John Dowie AM's recording reminds me the importance of being mindful.
I wonder if you could send me a copy of the script of the recording.
Thanks in advance
Hi again Barry, our wonderful volunteer Kate has done some research and found that the Bolivar sculpture is by Giovanni Della Putta who you can see here: https://www.destinationaustralia.gov.au/site/records.php?task=detail&id=...
I don't know this one personally Barry but I'll consult the experts and get back to you ASAP.
There is/was a bronze of a lady holding a bowl (approx. life size) at Bolivar STW. Was centre in a water feature. I think signifying purity. I believe this is also one of Dowies works. It would have been done in the 60's . Would be please to know if my memory is correct.
